Rachel Johnston
I work in ceramics, making objects that refer to landscape and also to the fact that the material of clay is very much of the earth itself. While some of my work is decorative and polished, other pieces are made from raw unprocessed clay that reacts unpredictably to being moulded and fired, producing objects whose surface reveals the geological processes constantly at work under our feet.
My interests have always been broad and varied. I recently realised that studying and teaching science was not enough to keep me interested, so I ventured out of science and into art. Now I have a studio where I do lots of experiments in ceramic arts; and, for work, I dabble in Community Arts and primary teaching.
