Pippa Julings

art in the community; art and spirituality;  creative projects for people with and without disability; art and healing

These preoccupations have informed my artistic practice in the time since, in mid-life, I gained an Art and Design Degree at Bradford School of Art in 2006.

I am currently studying for an MA at the Northern Programm for Art Psychotherapy in Sheffield, working on a mental health placement at Leeds Jewish Care Services.

In my art practice I use the language of shadows, layers, fragments and grids, using drawing, textiles, and experimental materials for installations.  I enjoy using historic references as a starting point for my work, having worked with imagery from the spiral tower of Samarra in Iraq, ancient Aramaic script and with costume collections from the Balkans. During 2007/8 I worked with a textile group at Bankfield Museum, Halifax, under the mentorship of Hilary Bower, developing work relating to their collection.

I am interested in issues around art and spirituality, and have written about healing and mysticism in the video work of Bill Viola.

I am self employed, working with people with and without disability, through Pyramid of Arts, Leeds. I look for opportunities to run collaborative art projects with an emphasis on building community, or exploring issues.  I advise the Schumacher North network on art work linked to group process and ecological issues.
